SBC Ameritech needed an instructional manual to accompany the directory listing databases it provided to other phone companies and directory publishers. Directory listing data was provided as a fixed-format database export file on tape. Detailed instructions were required for loading the file from the tape and parsing the data for import into the customer’s database. We wrote a manual containing numerous graphical exhibits that illustrated the exported data structure and presented examples of every type of listing record. The manual was written for an audience of database administrators.
